Judge grants delay in trial of Maxwell Anderson (2025)

The homicide trial for Maxwell Anderson, who is accused of killing Sade Robinson, has been delayed several months. The trial was supposed to begin Monday, Dec. 9, but the defense filed a motion Monday to delay it. Anderson's attorneys said they need more time to go over Anderson's phone records."There's a balancing act between moving it along and doing it right, and I need to do it right," defense attorney Tony Cotton said in court Monday. Prosecutors said Anderson was the person seen in surveillance footage on a first date with the 19-year-old woman back on April 1.The next day, someone found Robinson's severed leg on the beach in Cudahy's Warnimont Park. Investigators said her burned-out car and other body parts were discovered close to 30th and Lisbon just days later. Prosecutors believe Anderson was behind the gruesome acts and countered the defense's request for a delay."The state is ready to proceed to trial on Dec. 9. The state would object to an adjournment," Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan told the court Monday. The delay request comes as Anderson's legal team said a computer forensics expert from Florida may have discovered a potential alibi for the defendant. "Our expert believes that there's evidence on Mr. Anderson's phone that suggests he was using the internet presumably at his home during the time frame that another person would have been driving Ms. Robinson's car around," Cotton told the judge. Cotton said the expert just received the full phone records on Monday and would not have enough time to examine them before the start of the trial next Monday. The judge ultimately agreed to push back the trial."This is the first time it's scheduled for trial, and in order to allow the defense to prepare properly for trial, I want to secure the record. I do not want to create any type of issue on appeal, so I am going to grant the defense's motion to adjourn," Judge Laura Crivello said. There will be another scheduling conference on Feb. 10.The trial is now scheduled to begin May 27, with some procedural hearings between now and then. Robinson's mom told WISN 12 News she is "highly upset" with the decision to delay the trial. Anderson, 34, does remain in custody. He is charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and arson of property.
